Zacchaeus Sunday: First Liturgy at the Clifton Chapel.
Clifton Chapel, built in the 1840’s, provided a convenient place to worship for Wide Water residents when roads were impassable due to weather conditions. Both sides of the Civil War occupied this chapel on the hill. There were few trees then and it offered an excellent observation post for guarding the Potomac River shoreline. Following the war local families repaired the damaged church and it continued to serve the community. In 1896 it was officially dedicated and made part of the Aquia Episcopal Church. Now, as the parish home of Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, its quiet, wooded hilltop location offers a peaceful worship environment.
